Large Random Matrices and PDE

We present in this talk a new approach to the limit behaviour of the spectra of large random matrices such as the classical Dyson or Wishart matrices. The limiting PDE’s are analysed in great generality which allows to study nonlinear systems governed by large random matrices. We also investigate the associated Large Deviations theory and the optimal control of such systems.

“On the dynamics of dilute gases”

The evolution of a gas can be described by different models depending on the scale of observation. A natural question, raised by Hilbert in his sixth problem in 1900, is whether these models provide consistent predictions. In the case of gases of hard spheres, Lanford showed in 1974 that the Boltzmann equation appears as a law of large numbers in the low density limit, at least for very short times. In this talk we will present Lanford’s result, and try to explain the appearance of irreversibility in the process. We will also explain the short time limitation, which prevents from achieving the full program, namely deriving fluid mechanics equations from the system of equations for the particles.

On a class of robust nonconvex quadratic optimization problems.

Let us consider the following robust nonconvex quadratic optimization problem: min 1/2(x^(t)Ax + a^(t)xs.t. α ≤1/2x^(t)(B1 + μB2)x + (b1 + δb2)^(t)x ≤ β, ∀ μ ∈ [μ1, μ2], ∀ δ ∈ [δ1, δ2], where A, B1, B2 are real symmetric matrices, μ1, μ2, δ1, δ2, α, β ∈ R satisfying μ1 ≤ μ2, δ1 ≤ δ2 and α < β. Under certain assumptions on the data, we establish the alternative result; the S-lemma and optimality for the above problem. Join work with: F. Flores-Bazán A. Pérez del departamento de Ingeniería Matemática de la Universidad de la Concepción, Concepción-Chile.

phi-FEM, A fictitious domain method for finite
element methods on domains defined by level-sets

We present a new fictitious domain finite element method, well suited for elliptic problems posed in a domain given by a level-set function without requiring a mesh fitting the boundary. To impose the Dirichlet boundary conditions, we search the approximation
to the solution as a product of a finite element function with the given level-set function, also approximated by finite elements. The imposition of Neumann boundary conditions is less straightforward and requires the introduction of auxiliary variables nearthe boundary . Unlike other recent fictitious domain-type methods (XFEM, CutFEM), our approach does not need any non-standard numerical integration, neither on the cut mesh elements nor on the actual boundary. We shall present the proofs of optimal convergence of our methods on the example of Poisson equation using Lagrange finite elements of any order. We will also give numerical tests illustrating the optimal convergence of our methods and discuss the conditionning of resulting linear systems and the robustness with respect to the geometry. We will highlight the flexibility and efficiency of our method on elastic and dynamic problems. And more recently, we have proposed a phi-FEM formulation to solve particulate flows and Stokes equations.

Lie brackets and interpolation for controllability

This talk will survey old and recent results on the local controllability of control systems modeled by ODEs, focussing on results stated using Lie brackets of the vector fields defining the dynamics. We will propose a unified approach to determine and prove obstructions to local controllability. This approach relies on a recent Magnus-type representation formula of the state, a new Hall basis of the free Lie algebra over two generators and Gagliardo-Nirenberg interpolation inequalities. This approach allows to recover the known necessary conditions, but also to prove a conjecture of 1986 due to Kawski and many other new necessary conditions. Finally, we will see how these results translate for PDEs, in particular the Schrödinger equation. This is a joint work with Frederic Marbach, Jeremy Le Borgne and Mégane Bournissou.

Channels of energy

We will discuss the role of non-radiative solutions to nonlinear wave equations, in connection with soliton resolution. Using new channels of energy estimates we characterize all radial non-radiative solutions for a general class of nonlinear wave equations. This is joint work with C.Collot, T. Duyckaerts and F. Global-in-time dynamics for one-phase Muskat and two-phase Stokes gravity waves

In this talk we consider the evolution of an interface
evolving by an incompressible flow. On the one hand, we study the
one-phase Muskat problem, where the fluid is filtered in a porous
medium. In the gravity-stable case, we show that initial Lipschitz
graphs of arbitrary size provide global-in-time well-posedness. On the
other hand, we study the interface dynamics given by two fluids of
different densities evolving by the linear Stokes law. We show stability
to the flat stable case and exponential growth in the unstable regime.

On the control of fluids

The Navier-Stokes equations have been studied since many years. They are very relevant in mathematics and physics and many people have been concerned with the solution of several related major open problems. On the other hand, the control of PDE’s has attracted a lot of work the last decades. This has been motivated by its very relevant role in applications. This talk is mainly devoted to present some recent results dealing with the local and global control of systems of the Navier-Stokes kind. Additionally, we will consider other equations and systems with origin in fluid mechanics.

Combining finite element space-discretizations with symplectic time-marching schemes for linear Hamiltonian systems.

We provide a short introduction to the devising of a special type of methods for numerically approximating the solution of Hamiltonian partial differential equations. These methods use Galerkin space-discretizations which result in a system of ODEs displaying a discrete version of the Hamiltonian structure of the original system. The resulting system of ODEs is then discretized by a symplectic time-marching method. This combination results in high-order accurate, fully discrete methods which can preserve the invariants of the Hamiltonian defining the ODE system. We restrict our attention to linear Hamiltonian systems, as the main results can be obtained easily and directly, and are applicable to many Hamiltonian systems of practical interest including acoustics, elastodynamics, and electromagnetism. After a brief description of the Hamiltonian systems of our interest, we provide an introduction to symplectic time-marching methods for linear systems of ODEs which does not require any background on the subject. Finally, we consider the case of finite-element space discretizations. The emphasis is placed on the conservation properties of the fully discrete schemes. We end by describing ongoing work.

Nonlinear Diffusion Equations driven by Fractional Operators. Semigroups, self-similarity and asymptotics

We will review some basic models of nonlinear diffusion driven by nonlocal operators. Then we will present some lines of recent progress in the study of p-Laplacian evolution equations both of local or nonlocal type. Existence, regularity, self-similar solutions and asymptotic behaviour are discussed.

Analysis of open fluid systems with uncertain data

We consider the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with non-conservative boundary data. First, we discuss stability of (strong) solutions with respect to the data and conditional regularity problem. We show that the solutions remain regular as long as their amplitude is controlled. Next, we apply the abstract results to the problem of convergence of approximate (numerical) solutions with uncertain data. In particular, we address convergence of the stochastic collocation and the Monte-Carlo method.
